Dies used to reduce the outer dimension of a tube are called sink dies. Dies used to reduce the wall thickness of tubing and at the same time reduce the outer dimension of the tubing are called floating plug dies.
Blank (Nib) material
Sink and floating plug dies are generally made with a tungsten carbide (TC) blank, but polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is also used. Floating plugs are made from tungsten carbide (TC).
- Tungsten carbide dies are cased in cold rolled steel.
- PCD dies are cased in stainless steel.
- Dimensions depend on the size of the blank and of the die holder.
- Generally casings range from 25 mm to 75 mm (1” to 3”).
